Gloria Esther Theresa Tremaine Avey was born October 2nd, 1922, in South Central Los Angeles, California.
Born Gladys Esther Tremain, she changed her first name and added the ‘e’ back to Tremaine (the historic spelling). Theresa was her chosen Baptismal name.
Gloria had a true lust for life and free spirit—she sang, swam in the ice-cold waters of the Merced River in Yosemite Valley, and loved animals (took care of cats, birds, turtles, snakes, spiders, and their boxer Sock). She frequently visited the Neptune Fountain in Malaga Cove, took the ferry to Catalina, and drove into the mountains, desert, and cross-country to see family in Cincinnati. She drove a 1957 Chevrolet Bel Air and wore cat-eye sunglasses.
She was also a brilliant artist—always doodling in letterheads, customizing footers. Her logo design was used by The Southern California Edison Company for decades (without recognition, she submitted the drawings as a 20-year-old intern).
Gloria was the loving wife of Don Avey and mother of Daryl and Randal. She died in Redondo Beach in 1974.
Gloria lives on in her children, grandchildren, great-grandchildren, and onward. And in these wines. Without her, none of this would be possible. Calla Lillies were her favorite flower. You can find them at the base of our crest.
